Kids Rule! How to Paint Your Child’s Room
June 15, 2021
It seems like you brought your baby home just yesterday. The time has flown by, and your child has outgrown a nursery, ready to have a big kid room. Unlike other areas of the house, which you’ve designed carefully following certain rules, this room is special in that the rules don’t apply! This space can truly be as unique as your child, but where do you start? How can you make sure the room turns out okay? Here are some tips to help!
Include Your Child in the Color Selection
Although it may be tempting to make all the decisions about the room yourself, this is a great opportunity to get feedback from your child and interact with them. After all, it’s their space, and they’ll be the one sleeping there! Allow them to express their personality and creativity so that they can feel truly comfortable in their special room. As an added bonus, it’ll give you the chance to have some fun with your child and help you get to know their tastes and interests better.
If your child becomes overwhelmed by the number of available colors, you can put together a few options for them to choose from. Including them in the makeover process helps them feel more ownership and pride in the space, which may lead them to take better care of it. It’s a win-win!
Have More Than One Wall Color
As adults, we tend to think that painting a room entails using a single color for the walls, but it definitely doesn’t have to be this way, especially for a kid’s room. Try a combination of colors! Whether you choose one color per wall, an accent wall, stripes, or another design choice, you child can put their stamp on the room with bold color choices and designs.
Paint the Ceiling
You don’t have to limit your painting to just the walls—consider painting the ceiling as well. In some cases, particularly in a themed room, the ceiling can be a convenient fifth wall and allow even more fun design options. For instance, if your child enjoys science or space, you can paint the ceiling a dark color to signify space. Or perhaps a lighter shade of the wall color for the ceiling can help the room feel larger and further tie in the design elements of the room.
Hire Professionals to Paint
When you look at the finished product, the last thing you want to notice about your child’s room is all the little mistakes you made while painting. That’s why you should bring in professional house painters to give you and your child exactly the look you’re going for.
In the end, painting a child’s room is way different from any other room. You have the freedom to have fun, break the traditional design rules, and make the space one-of-a-kind—just like your loved one.
