Set the Mood: How Paint Color Can Affect You
July 16, 2021
You’ve searched on Instagram for designs you like, but you want your home to reflect your unique style. Standing in front of the wall of color swatches at the paint store only makes the process feel more overwhelming. How will you choose the right interior paint color? Before you can answer that question, you need to ask yourself this one: what kind of mood do you want to have in the room? In this post, you’ll learn how colors may affect your mood and which colors you should consider picking for the walls.
Why Color Matters
Many qualitative studies have been conducted on the emotional and psychological effects of color; however, it is important to know that sometimes perceptions of color can vary by culture or even vary from person to person. For example, Western cultures typically view the color white to symbolize purity and cleanliness while white in Eastern cultures is used as a color of mourning. A color that feels comforting or soothing to you may have a different effect on someone else.
With all that being said, generally speaking when it comes to mood, these colors can have the following effects:
Red, Orange, and Yellow
These colors tend to energize and stimulate. Think of a beautiful sunrise or the colors of flowers in a field. For some, these colors can feel aggressive, but many find them enlivening.
Green and Blue
If you take a cue from nature, you’re sure to find greens and blues relaxing. From a clear blue sky to ocean or lake water to beautiful greenery, these are traditionally calming shades.
Neutrals
Although the name “neutral” suggests that these colors achieve nothing, these colors can have an effect on your mood. While some feel cozy with a cool shade of gray, others can feel bored or even depressed.
How to Choose the Right Paint Color
For interior room design, the paint color you choose can help or hinder the atmosphere you want the space to have. In bedrooms, for instance, you may desire a peaceful retreat where you can rest and unwind. In this case, you may want to go with a cool paint color like a shade of purple, blue, or green. Certain shades of gray can also have a calming effect, but some people can find gray depressing. Other rooms, like the dining room, tend to be more lively spaces and can therefore have more invigorating colors like warm reds, oranges, and yellows.
In the end, you can consider how colors impact people in general, but the ultimate decision is yours. You need to choose colors that appeal to you and create the kind of environment where you feel comfortable. That way, you feel truly at home.
