The truth is, painting the exterior of your house is quite an undertaking – and while it’s undeniably exciting to transform your home, you might still have a few doubts and questions about the whole process, including what you’ll need to pay. Fortunately, the cost of exterior painting is relatively straightforward to determine once you know which factors you’ll need to consider! Continue reading to learn more about four key things you’ll want to keep in mind.
1. Consider the Size of Your Home
Similarly to how you’d measure the dimensions of specific rooms that you want to paint, you’re going to want to measure the square footage of your home’s exterior, or at least the areas you want to paint. The average-sized home may require anywhere from 8 to 15 gallons of paint, depending on the surface area of the exterior siding. Keep in mind that often, one coat isn’t enough, and two will be required in order to ensure that your paint looks as vibrant as intended, in addition to being durable enough to endure for several years. Most exterior paints cost around $50 to $100 or so per gallon – so be sure you calculate how much you’ll need before you start buying it, to not over or underspend.
2. Factor in the Cost of Prep Work
You won’t be able to begin painting until all of the necessary preparations have been made. This includes things like making repairs to the walls or foundation, sanding down and thoroughly washing surfaces, recaulking cracks and gaps as needed – the list goes on. This prep work can take time, but it can also be costly, especially if there’s quite a lot that needs to be done and you’re hiring help. That said, you shouldn’t neglect these costs or ignore the need to ensure proper preparations are made; it’s all done to ensure beautiful and lasting results.
3. Understand Labor Costs
The cost to hire a team of painters can vary, but you can often expect to pay somewhere between $1.50 and $4 per square foot. This means that this factor is also closely tied to the size of your home/how many exterior walls you want to paint. However, this doesn’t mean you should go with the cheapest bid, as the quality of your results will be directly influenced by how much you pay!
4. The Future Need to Repaint
Lastly, it’s important to remember that paint doesn’t last forever. In a perfect world, we’d only need to repaint when our preferences change – but weather, wildlife, and various other outdoor factors can take their toll on your paint. You’ll inevitably have to repaint down the road, and though you won’t have to pay those costs yet, it’s important to be aware of them. This is also why it’s so important to do things correctly the first time and opt for high-quality paint; it’ll last longer, and you’ll get much better value!
