Painting the interior of your house can breathe new life into your space, transforming it into a fresh and inviting abode that impresses all of your family members, friends, and guests. However, knowing when it’s time to repaint can sometimes be a bit tricky. Whether you’re looking to update the color scheme, refresh worn-out walls, or simply maintain your home’s already-gorgeous appearance, here are some signs that might indicate it’s time to break out the new paint, along with how often you should repaint the various rooms in your house.

How Do I Know When It’s Time to Repaint?

You’ll want to keep your eyes peeled for a few clues that indicate it’s time to repaint. One thing to look for is faded or discolored walls; over time, exposure to sunlight and other environmental factors can cause paint to lose its vibrancy and become faded or discolored. Additionally, visible wear and tear such as scuff marks, scratches, or dents can detract from the overall appearance of your walls. Likewise, peeling or cracked paint usually means the paint itself is no longer adhering to the surface beneath it. You might also simply feel like it’s time for a change and you want to try a new color scheme!

How Often Should I Repaint Certain Rooms?

Though there are many signs that indicate it’s time to repaint, it’s important to keep in mind that it also heavily varies based on the type of room. Consider the following:

  • Living rooms – These high-traffic rooms need to be repainted every 5 to 7 years to remain fresh and inviting for all of your guests.
  • Kitchens – Similar to living rooms, kitchens serve as frequent gathering areas and also experience more messes due to all of the cooking that happens! They should be repainted every 4 or 5 years.
  • Bedrooms – These rooms are normally quiet and low-traffic, meaning they can often go 10+ years without needing to be repainted. Children’s bedrooms usually get redone more often though, since their interests change as they age.
  • Bathrooms – Since bathrooms are exposed to excess humidity and moisture, they usually need to be repainted every 4 or so years using water-based paints.
  • Hallways – Hallways experience more traffic than any other room in the house, meaning they’ll often have more smudges, scuffs, and stains on their paint. Aim to repaint them every 3 years.

If you’re still unsure about your repainting project, you shouldn’t hesitate to consult with a team of professional painters for their insight and guidance. They’ll easily be able to tell you if it’s time to repaint—and they’ll ensure the process is carried out correctly to produce spectacular results!
